Fat Myths, Facts And Fallacies

According to medical experts the root cause of many of our modern day ills is fat, we are apparently overweight, have coronary heart disease, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure all because of eating fats. However is this the truth, or has medical science been blinded into believing this due to some fundamental flaws in their understanding of both heart disease and the role of fats or lipids in human nutrition?

Some of the largest selling drugs on the market in the world today are the lipid-lowering drugs, with sales in excess of 23 billion dollars a year. However, according to the research my friend Caroline and her friends at the research department of a well-known university, we might have been led astray. This we do know, some fats are bad for us and some fats are good for us, some fats even help us lower our cholesterol and move fat out of our bodies. Due to research that has come out in the past few years we also know that without fat, and without cholesterol we cannot make hormones at all. So we now know we need cholesterol to keep us healthy! Yes, that's right cholesterol is not the bad guy, that we have all been led to believe.

Claim #1. Low Fat food is healthier for us: this manipulative propaganda still has many people confused about their food choices, buying processed, hybridised, GMO's and then microwaving it and buying low fat until our food is so un-natural you might as well be eating cardboard.

The Truth: fat is necessary for the uptake of many nutrients, particularly the fat soluble vitamins A, E, D, and K and the carotenoids. Without fat we cannot make hormone and symptoms of hormone imbalance have been on the rise over the past 30 to 40 years.

Claim #2. Saturated fat is a chief cause of heart disease.

The Truth: Coronary Heart Disease was not discovered until 1910, but before that time saturated fats were much more prevalent in our diets. In fact people in norther India consume 17 times more animal fat, yet have 7 times less CHD than people in southern India.

East Africans drink 10 litres of fill fat milk as day and no CHD. Older Russian Georgians consume the most saturated fat in the world and live to very old ages. The people of Crete have a diet containing 40% fat, yet have 5% of the CHD deaths of the US. The Massai tribe have no CHD, consuming s diet consisting of meat, blood and milk.

A 40 years study called the "Framington Heart Study" which began in 1948 and involved 6,000 people were forced to admit: "We found that the people who ate the most saturated fat and cholesterol had the lowest levels of serum cholesterol, weighed the least and were the most active."

Claim #3. That makes you fat and is chiefly responsible for the obesity epidemic. First of all if that were true we would be getting slimmer with all the 'low fat' foods around instead of getting fatter as is happening all over the world.

The Truth: Even though fat contains more calories than carbohydrates, it is carbohydrates that store as fat when over-consumed. Insulin is produced in response to carbohydrates, not fat and it is fat that keeps our blood sugar balanced when we eat too many carbohydrates which can raise our blood sugar to dangerously high levels. Insulin is produced to remove excess glucose and it first of all stores it as glycogen, then as fat. Insulin also blocks the release of fat burning glucogen, this metabolic roller-coaster ride is directly responsible for the rise in diabetes, obesity, heart disease, sticky cholesterol problems and chronic inflammation and tiredness that is now sweeping the globe.

Claim #4. Cholesterol is the most dangerous substance on the planet today. Every doctor, nutritionist and food advertisement for years has warned about the evils of cholesterol. We have an entire industry that revolves around testing for cholesterol levels, lowering cholesterol levels and creating foods and drugs that we're told lower cholesterol levels and make us healthier.

The Truth: Cholesterol is made naturally by the body, nothing that is made naturally by the body is a bad thing, unless it becomes imbalanced and anything in a state of imbalance is a symptom telling us to get back into balance. Cholesterol is an important nutrient, ti strengthens cell membranes and intestinal walls, make bile and is vital for hormone and vitamin production.

Cholesterol is also an immune booster and an antioxidant. New research suggests that diets high in cholesterol actually protect against neuro-degenerative disorders such as Parkinson's and Alzheimer's. Seretonin receptors in the brain need cholesterol to function properly, brain cells must last a lifetime and cholesterol is a brain protector.

Claim #5. Cholesterol-reducing drugs save lives. The largest selling drugs in the world are these and they are produced in response to bad science, already proving to do more harm than good.

The Truth: It would seem to be less than ideal to try to shut down a critical nutrient like cholesterol, it could and does have serious consequences, but the problems that are being found are far more wide-reaching than first thought.

The lipid lowering drugs have now been implicated in an increase in the number of lymphatic cancers, neurological problems and heart health issues; the very problem they were supposed to treat. Several studies have shown that these statin drugs shut down CoEnzyme Q10, with serious ramifications, without CoQ10 we cannot product ATP with is the energy source for our whole body, inlcuding the heart pump. Statins reduce CoQ10 by up to 40%, many people are already deficient in this critical nutrient by the time they are over 50 and this is the age group when most heart attacks occur. Low CoQ10 levels have also been implicated in disorders like Parkinson's and Alzheimer's.

Claim#6. Cholesterol levels are the best indicator of potential heart problems.This myth is huge, as we all religiously have our cholesterol levels checked, at the doctors and using the new 'at home' test kits that are being recommended and sold in pharmacies throughout the world.

The Truth: A check of your levels of C-Reactive protein, homocysteine and fasting blood glucose levels are far better indicators of your heart health, yet doctors who have been indoctrinated with the cholesterol myth are reluctant to use these methods. Levels of Oxidised LDL is also a marker, but this actually relfects a shortage of antioxidants, not statin drugs. This damaged cholesterol is found in powdered eggs, powdered milk, microwaved meats and fats and in well done steaks.

Fasting blood glucose levels are one of the best indicators of heart health, there is a 500% chance of heart attack and stroke if your blood sugar is high. Elevated blood sugar stimulates free radicals, reduces vitamin C uptake into our cells, impairs immune function, decreases nitric oxide levels in our arteries, inhibits the breakdown of clots and dramatically increases glycation. What does this mean for you? This is a recipe for glyco-oxidation of the collagen in our artery walls which makes them rigid and less able to expand and contract (atherosclerosis) and also attracts plaque like a magnet.
